Light is fast enough for modern online casinos
We are living in interesting times. A little while ago scientists spotted that some neutrinos were travelling faster than he speed of light, and the speed of light is supposed to be the universal speed limit. The jury is out regarding the accuracy of their results, but it is causing a considerable amount of head scratching by the boffins.
Next up it was trans-Atlantic market traders complaining that fibre optic cables, which slow down the speed of light by a small amount, was putting them at a disadvantage on the trading floors of Wall Street. Those few nanoseconds delay meant that they could be piped at the post by local traders and as a result a whole new network of hollow fibres, which don’t slow down light, is being laid under the ocean.
Now it seems that online casinos have become so popular that the networks that serve them are becoming overcrowded. In response, casino and sports betting company bet365 is working with the London based company Geo Networks to establish the first i-gaming national fibre optic network which will open in 2012.
The network, which will cost over £3million, will link all of the key centres of bet365 in the UK, which are based at Heathrow, Manchester, London and Stoke-on-Trent. It will provide a robust service with low latency to millions of bet365 customers and it will cope with very high traffic spikes.
A spokesman from Bet365 said that the new fibre optic network would allow the company to respond to increased demands. The network will be scalable and reliable and will provide an excellent end-user experience. The Geo Networks Chief Executive Officer Chris Smedley said that the online gaming sector was a huge growth area and that it needs ever increasing network capacity. He added that this was their first foray in the i-gaming industry and they looking forward to increasing their experience in the sector.
